Visit the old Parliament site in Pingvellir, explore Borgarfjorour country and visit the hot springs, the lava waterfalls in Hraunfossar, and visit the Maritime Museum in Hellissandur. Enjoy a boat cruise, a horse show, and visits to a farm, the replica farmhouse of Erik the Red, and one of the oldest houses in Iceland. Take pictures of the Gooafoss, Hveravellir and Gullfoss Waterfalls. Visit the Geysir Area, and walk around its hot springs. And finally you may wish to enjoy a swim in the natural geothermal pool in the Blue Lagoon.

Start your vacation with visits to the central historical places of the country: the old PARLIAMENT SITE at Pingvellir National Park (Parliament Fields), founded in 930 A.D.; in Borgarfjorour country the DEILDATUNGUHVER, one of the world's most powerful hot springs; REYKHOLT (the Smokey Hill), a tiny village and former farm site of the 13th-century writer/scholar and chieftain Snorri Sturluson; and Hraunfossar, the LAVA WATERFALLS, where crystal-clear water seems to drop out of a 1,000-year-old lava field. Proceed to Snaefellsnes, where you will stay for the next two nights. (FB,D) | | Day 4 | Snaefellsnes | (Tue.) Your first visit this morning is to Arnastapi, a small village where, during a walk along the coast, you will enjoy the sea birds, kittiwakes, and arctic terns singing loudest. Via the Djuparlonssandur continue your journey around the peninsula and stop in the small village of Hellissandur. Visit the MARITIME MUSEUM and learn about the traditions and lives of the former fishermen. Next, visit the BJARNARHOFN FARM (Bear's Harbor), where the farmer, Hildibrandur, explains how to prepare shark meat, and you can sample this traditional Icelandic specialty. Then drive to Stykkisholmur and enjoy a leisurely CRUISE around the islands of Breioafjorour (the Wide Fjord). End the day with "fishing," where a net is thrown out to unveil the wonders of the sea. You may even get to taste fresh scallops and sea urchins! (FB,D) | | Day 5 | Akureyri | (Wed.) Today head north and visit the replica FARMHOUSE OF ERIK THE RED. Learn about his amazing saga before continuing further north to Skagafjorour, known as the "Valley of Horses," and enjoy a HORSE SHOW. Next, arrive in Akureyri, the biggest town in North Iceland. (FB) | | Day 6 | Akureyri | (Thu.) In the morning visit GOOAFOSS (Waterfall of the Gods). Continue to LAKE MYVATN and visit some of the natural wonders around the lake and the numerous pseudo-craters. Enjoy a short walk through the Dimmuborgir (Dark Cities) with the amazing rock formations and the colorful hill at Namaskaro. Also time to take pictures of the active volcano area of Krafia, where the last eruption took place in 1984, before returning to Akureyri. (FB) | | Day 7 | Hvolsvollur | (Fri.) Travel across the highlands and stop at the geothermal zone of Hveravellir (Field of Hot Springs) and see how steam comes up naturally. Leave this oasis and continue south through more deserted landscapes and arrive at Gullfoss (Golden Waterfalls). Then drive to the Geysir area and enjoy a walk around the hot springs. Overnight in Hvolsvollur. (FB,D) | | Day 8 | Hvolsvollur | (Sat.) Today's highlight: the National Park of Skaftafell. Drive to the tongue of Skaftafellsjokull and enjoy a nice walk up to the biggest European glacier. Stop at Nupsstadur farm for a visit of the old tiny TURF CHAPEL next to the farmhouse. On the way back, drive through the lava fields of Eldhraun (fire lava). Then admire the WATERFALLS of Skogar and Seljalandsfoss before returning to your hotel. Tonight, enjoy a farewell dinner at your hotel to celebrate the success of your Icelandic vacation. (FB,D) | | Day 9 | Keflavik | (Sun.) In Eyrarbakki we visit one of the OLDEST HOUSES in Iceland. Then continue to the BLUE LAGOON, a natural geothermal pool in the middle of a large and dramatic lava field. Time to swim in the warm, mineral-rich water before going back to Keflavik Airport.
