Itinerary
DayDestinationDescription
Days 1-2ViterboYou can wander the perfect gardens of the Villa Lante in nearby Bagnaia or visit Viterbo's beautifully preserved palaces and churches to warm up for the ride. Alternatively, soak in Viterbo's open-air hot springs or swim in the lake.
Day 3Viterbo to MontefiasconeClinging to the rim of an old volcanic crater, Montefiascone dates back to the time of the Etruscans. Be sure to check out the curious tomb of the nobleman named Fugger, who died en route to Rome from over-indulging in the region's wines. His story lives on in the famous white Est Est Est wine, world-renowned for its light, fruity flavour.
Days 4-5Montefiascone to BolsenaCycle along the ancient Via Cassia, through the picturesque village of Capodimente, towards medieval Bolsena. The cobbled streets and charming castle call for exploration, so spend your free afternoon here.
Days 6-8Bolsena to OrvietoThe pilgrim route runs across a plateau, so enjoy spectacular views of the region as you pedal over it. The journey comes to an end in stunning Orvieto, which seems rather precariously perched on a series of tufa crags. The dramatic position of the town makes for fantastic photos and don't miss the famous 15th century Duomo, with its intricate facade and fine frescoes.
