| Details | | Intrepid Travel | | | | Day | Destination | Description | | Days 1-2 | Levanto | A circular walk in the hills above Levanto is a good way to warm up for the journey ahead. Hike to the site of Monte Bardellone, tower of the feared Zolaschi who once controlled the ancient ridge-top trade route that connects the isolated villages of the Cinque Terre. Back in Levanto, reward tired leg muscles with a dip in the Ligurian Sea or savour a glass of sweet schiacchetra at sunset. | | Days 3-4 | Levanto to Monterosso | Take a path along stony mule paths, through woodland and over fragrant scrub-covered slopes. From cliffs high above the sea, the views are endless, encompassing the whole of the Cinque Terre. In Monterosso there is a free day to explore the town's laneways or to do some more walking in the hills above the town, or down to coastal Vernazza. Sample specialties such as anchovy-topped bruschetta and locally made limoncello. | | Day 5 | Monterosso to Manarola/Riomaggiore | Follow the spectacular coastal path and take in the sweeping views from an 11th century castle before heading on to picture-postcard Corniglia, its narrow alleyways stretching out from the tiny bay. There is the choice of stopping for the night in Manarola, surrounded by vine-covered hills, or continuing on to Riomaggiore, the last of the colourful Cinque Terre towns. | | Days 6-8 | Riomaggiore to Portovenere | A final day's walk travels up through terraced vineyards, pine trees and chestnut woods before emerging to dramatic views of the coastline. Descend to Portovenere where it is possible to take a boat and admire the five towns from the sea or explore the nearby island of Palmaria. |
