Visit the heart of Umbria, a verdant stretch of land, which begins on the banks of the Tiber and ends in the spiritual heartland of Assisi. Often referred to as the green heart of Italy, Umbria nevertheless features a diversity of landscape - open rolling hills beneath the moderate peaks of the Apennines, interspersed with small alluvial plains. Roman relics, numerous imposing churches and gaunt monasteries are a testament to the lofty and protected location of some of the archetypal hill towns. These delightful and enduring towns of pinkish stone, some dating back to the Etruscans, are scattered throughout Umbria and you'll be charmed as you discover a little of their magic on this walk.

| Details | | Intrepid Travel | | | | Day | Destination | Description | | Days 1-2 | Todi to Giano dell'Umbria | Set on a craggy hilltop, Todi has managed to maintain much of its old-world charm. Its former prosperity is evident in the grandeur of its central piazza. Head downhill into the Tiber Valley and walk across the rolling pastures of Monti Martani before descending to Giano for the evening. | | Day 3 | Giano dell'Umbria to Montefalco | Explore Umbria's rural landscapes as the trail winds through sheep pastures, vineyards, olive groves, wheat and barley fields to Montefalco. Known as the Balcony of Umbria, Montefalco is a pleasant town with expansive views overlooking the Umbrian hills. | | Day 4 | Montefalco to Bevagna | Spend a relaxed morning exploring Montefalco before an afternoon walk through vineyards and meadows to the walled medieval town of Bevagna. For a taste of ancient Roman times, wander down to the thermal baths where there are some impressive mosaics on display. | | Day 5 | Bevagna to Spello | Cross fertile plains to the lovely town of Spello, complete with narrow cobblestone laneways, a 14th century fortress and the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore with frescoes by Pinturicchio. | | Days 6-8 | Spello to Assisi | The final walk traverses scrub and wood to Monte Sunasio, then down the stony path used by St Francis to Assisi. Alternatively, choose the route around the side of the mountain to the Carceri Hermitage and then down to the town. Assisi remains tranquil despite the thousands of pilgrims who come each year to pay their respects. Looking back at the town from the valley below, the marble buildings seem to shimmer in the sunlight. |
