Drive through the winding streets of Tunis' old town. This is a great opportunity to see the rich cultural heritage of this old, walled city and to discover the exquisite craftsmanship of Tunisia's artisans. In the afternoon, depart to Carthage and visit historical sites such as the ancient sanctuary of the goddess Tanit. Continue to the Moorish village of Sidi Bou Said, which has managed to preserve its old world charm and peacefulness. Meal(s) Included: Breakfast, Dinner | | Day 3 | Gabes | After breakfast, depart to Sousse where you will visit The Old Medina and the Mausoleum of Sidi Sahbi before continuing to El Jem. Visit the ancient Thysdrus before driving to Sfax where you will visit the Old Town then have lunch. Continue to the town of Douz where you will have lunch. After lunch continue to Nefzaoua and the triangular oases of Sabria, Noail and Zaafrane. Dinner and overnight in Douz. You will pass by the Chott El Jerid salt lake where you will observe the vast mountains of white crystals. Continue through Kebili to arrive at Tozeur. City tour of Tozeur including the museum of Art and Culture, the old Medina and the unique palm grove. This afternoon travel by 4WD vehicle to the sand dunes of Lariguett, for an unforgettable desert experience. Take a one-hour train ride, aboard the RED LIZARD train, through the mountains to visit the Phosphate Mines in Metlaoui. Meal(s) Included: Breakfast, Dinner | | Day 8 | Tunis | Leisurely breakfast then depart to the ruined Roman city of Sbeitla. Spend time touring the ruins located at the foot of a hill by the river. Continue to Kairouan, once the capital of Maghreb and still an important Islamic centre. Visit the Great Mosque, an important Islamic architecture, the Aghlabite Pools, which represents a most important piece of hydraulic engineering of the Middle Ages. Here you may visit the covered Souks in the Medina and try your bargaining skills to garner great souvenir values. Return to Tunis for overnight.
